Texas Boot Room #29 - The Wrath of Abell

After a long lay-off, the boys have a lot to get off their chests: from Rafa's contract, to his curious lineup changes to a streak of dropped points. Plus, Derek breaks an all-time record for amount of whistles needed in one podcast.

Good work guys. Can I just point the old case of we could of bought Cantona, Ronaldo argument which I've heard down the pub a million times is shite one and I'll tell you why. You're not looking at the bigger picture

1) Do you really think Cantona would of made a difference to our pile of shite under Souness/Evans??! The whole club set up at the time was completey tits up, he'd probably be too busy out the piss with the rest of the squad back then with our non'existent defence.

2)Ronaldo took a few years to develop at the mancs i doubt he would of been the same player if he came under Houllier, did houllier like flair players? No, he would of deffo not got the same freedom under Houllier and probably not of lasted a year!.

It all if's and but's and their shite arguments.

They're not shite arguements, mate. At least not for the reasons that you cite...

1. I disagree with you that players of such high caliber wouldn't have been highly successful with us. Maybe not AS successful, becuase the rest of the team wasn't as strong as the team they ended up at, but they'd have made us better, without question.

But that's not even the point...

2. The whole point of the arguement was not to claim we would have been "world champs" with those various players on board - It was to highlight how our stupid delaying and indescision was repeatedly the reason that we didn't end up with such top quality players...

And no matter whether you feel they'd have been successful with us or not, you can't argue the poor record we have of sealing the deal with high-profile targets.

Thanks for listening & keep 'em coming.

Cheers
D.

Sorry Derek I still have to disagree.

1)They were high caliber at the club they were at but it doesn't necessarily mean if they came to us they would of gone on to be considered high caliber, ok certain players with natural talent are going to make an impact but nobody knows how much or less depending on the club circumstances and the management at the time. Certain players who choose liverpool over the mancs/whoever could of been world beaters under them and shite with us and the same vice versa, someone like veron maybe might of played better under benitez or maybe evra could of come to us and been a bag of shite for the first 5 games and never got a kick again. All very hypothetical.

2)I think you're being very harsh, I think we have signed alot of top quality players, i think a combination of certain managers, the team never pushed on for different reasons, we spent alot of money under evans,gh and benitez. Nobody knows if these players are going to be a success or not when your signing them so cant really have a pop. Don't forget we dont have the money to go the extra step like chelsea or united etc in some cases so we cant always take that risk as we've had so many flops at anfield the last 20 years. Ronaldo was by no means the finished player when the mancs got him so you have to give credit to whiskey nose for his track record in developing players and hence making people like us saying we could of signed him!. Maybe someone like Babel is in the same boat as Ronaldo was in when he started at united just we arent delveloping him as well as they can?? WHO KNOWS??!!

Yours Sincerely
